Romantic or just plain creepy?

Romance is kind of a funny thing to grasp. When you like somebody, you usually want to show them that you care. How do you do this though? Write them a poem, take them to dinner, buy them flowers? Many times people will try very hard to impress their significant other or the person they want to be their significant other. There are certain ways to approach this however.

A rose is one of the simplest acts of romance, but even this woman seems a little apprehensive.

You need to make sure that you and that person are on the same level, because if not, your “loving” gesture just may turn out creepy. For example, if you are dating somebody and the feelings are mutual, then coming home to a candlelit dinner is romantic. If you simply like someone but you’re not sure they feel the same way, yet you do this exact same thing anyways…it may be creepy. I know I don’t want to come home to find some dude who has a crush on me surrounded by candles with a home cooked meal in my dining room. Weird! I decided to see what exactly “crosses the line” from some of my friends when it comes to romantic gestures, both guys and girls, and you would be surprised just how far some love struck people will go to make an impact.

“This one girl from one of my classes had a super huge crush on me and she made a portrait of me swallowing the sun and under it was inscribed ‘you inspire me.’ Creeper.” Raymond –San Antonio, TX

A portrait of somebody could actually be a really good idea. My friend has a hand-drawn portrait of himself and his girlfriend that she sketched out of coal. It is really nice. If this is something you want to give a crush however, think again. It makes it seem like you’ve been studying their every move so that you can get the picture just right. Or maybe that’s just me. And no matter what type of drawing you decide to give someone, portrait or not, make sure it is good, or you’re just going to look stupid.

“My boss had a crush on me and ordered me custom underwear online. On the butt was a silhouette of a naked girl on a leash…” Alyssa – San Antonio, TX

All I have to say is, I don’t get it. If I was married and my husband got me this, I would still be weirded out. I don’t know the exact context of this situation, but the guy could be trying to be funny. Poor guy, your joke failed.

“He gives me this milk chocolate rose, the one with 2 kisses stuck together and wrapped in red foil with a green plastic stem.He says, ‘hey I got this for you. I wouldn’t eat it if I were you though, it’s like a month old.” He then hands me this flower which looks like it’s been unwrapped, eaten, filled back up with candy and then wrapped again.” Meredith- Austin, TX

This isn’t only a little strange but it is lazy. This happened in middle or high school though, so I forgive the guy I guess. If you want to give a girl chocolates, do it! That is something sweet and simple to show you are thinking about them. If you are going to eat out the chocolates first however and try to repackage it with different chocolates, ones that are potentially old, then please get help. If you didn’t want to spend the money in the first place then a simple hand written note would have been fine.

I could go on to suggest “romantic” things to do for someone, but I really can’t be the judge of that. Stuff like this is basically all about timing and making sure you know (for the most part) how the other person feels about you. Then again, I don’t think custom underwear are ever a good idea.

What is the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for you?

Or,  has anyone tried to do something romantic for you and you were left asking, why?
